
The FDIC will host eight identical telephone seminars for bankers this fall on the agency’s rules for deposit insurance coverage. The free seminars will guide bank employees through the process of determining a customer’s deposit insurance coverage. Seminars will run two to three hours and will occur on September 17 and November 4, 2008. The events are open to employees of all FDIC-insured banks and savings associations.
The Federal Reserve Board launched an online resource to help consumers make informed choices when refinancing a home loan. “A Consumer’s Guide to Mortgage Refinancing” contains useful tips and answers to frequently asked questions about the refinancing process.
California Attorney General Edmund Brown, Jr. announced that his office has reached a settlement with Citibank regarding the company’s former practice of sweeping positive account balances from credit-card customer accounts into Citibank’s general fund. “The company knowingly stole from its customers, mostly poor people and the recently deceased, when it designed and implemented the sweeps,” Brown charged.
